Morning News Broadcast

Every morning, the “Thiriot News” program starts promptly at 9:05 A.M. It is hosted by students who have been trained as TV announcers. The news reporters share current events, present student awards, highlight special events, and lead the school in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The Thiriot News is the place to tune for the lunch menu, the daily weather report, and videos of special activities. This awesome, student news program is viewed in every classroom, every day.

Garden

Thiriot Elementary is proud of its vegetable garden. Students in 1st through 5th grade help care for our crops. This year, the fifth grade students decided what should be planted for the fall crop. Then students in all grades prepared the soil and planted seeds. To help us learn about gardening and eating healthier, a gardener from Create a Change Now comes to Thiriot every Tuesday. Classes takes turns working with the gardener in the garden beds.

Our fall harvest consists of squash, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, and bell peppers. When our crops are ready to be picked, the farmer helps us harvest the vegetables and lets students sample them. Most of the vegetables we grow are sold at our Farmers Market that we hold a couple of times a year.

Great American Award

The Great American Award Program is open to fifth grade students at Thiriot Elementary. The Great American program is part of the fifth grade social studies curriculum, and helps build pride in being American citizens. Students who accomplish at least three of the six requirements receive a certificate. WATCH D.O.G.S.

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is a father involvement, educational program designed by the National Center For Fathering. There are two primary goals of the WATCH D.O.G.S. program:

   1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.

   2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.

So who are our Thiriot WATCH D.O.G.S.? Thiriot WATCH D.O.G.S. are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer at least one day each year at our school. During the day, Watch D.O.G.S. may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow or any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.
